Ten years ago, if you'd ordered a "local beer" at most Alexandria bars, you'd have gotten a Virginia-brewed macro lager and a wink. Today? The Commonwealth supports more than 300 craft breweries, and a surprising number of the best ones are close enough that their beer arrives at our back door colder than some national brands arrive from the distributor.

Our tap list has quietly shifted along with the landscape. Where big-name drafts once dominated, Virginia kegs now hold serious real estate — and honestly, they've earned it pint by pint. Here's a field guide to the local breweries we're pouring right now, and how to make sense of the state's scene without leaving your barstool.

The Home Team Advantage

Port City Brewing (Alexandria) — You can't talk Virginia beer in our zip code without starting here. Port City's been the anchor of Northern Virginia craft since 2011, and their Optimal Wit remains the benchmark Belgian-style witbier in the region — citrusy, softly spiced, and dangerously crushable on a July patio. Their Essential Pale Ale is our house-adjacent pour: balanced, clean, and the rare pale ale that pairs with everything from our fish and chips to a plain burger.

Hardywood Park (Richmond) — Richmond's craft scene punches way above its weight, and Hardywood is a big reason why. Their gingerbread stout became a local legend each winter, but we keep their year-round lagers and pilsners in rotation because they're simply well-made, honest beer. When a lager is this clean, you notice everything good about it.

Virginia Beer Co. (Williamsburg) — These folks walk the line between classic styles and playful experimentation better than almost anyone in the state. Their El Oso de Cerveza Mexican-style lager has become an unexpected staff favorite, especially alongside our fried chicken. Bright, bready, with a whisper of lime-like brightness that doesn't need the wedge.

O'Connor Brewing (Norfolk) — A Tidewater staple that made its name with the Great Dismal Black IPA — a style-bender that roasts like a stout but hops like an IPA. It's the beer we hand to IPA drinkers who claim they don't like dark beer, just to watch them reconsider their worldview.

Adroit Theory (Purcellville) — The wildcard. Loudoun County's Adroit Theory makes big, unapologetic, pastry-adjacent imperial stouts and hazy IPAs with labels that look like metal album covers. When we get a keg, it doesn't last the week. This is dessert-in-a-glass territory — order it instead of the chocolate torte and thank us later.

Strangeways (Richmond) —.rounding out the list with barrel-aged wild ales and saisons that lean rustic and funky. If you usually reach for wine with dinner, start here. Their mixed-culture work gives Champagne-adjacent complexity at beer prices.

Fresh Is a Logistics Story

Here's something most tap lists won't tell you: beer is perishable, and hoppy styles especially so. The aromatics in an IPA — those citrus and pine notes you love — begin fading the moment the keg is filled. Heat and oxygen accelerate the slide.

The advantage of pouring local isn't just hometown pride. It's that a keg from Purcellville or Alexandria might reach our cellar days after packaging, versus weeks for something trucked in from across the country. We keep our walk-in cooler at proper cellar temps, run our lines clean on a strict schedule, and we'd rather kick a keg fast than pour a stale pint slow. If a hazy IPA is tasting a touch dull by the last pour, that's on us — and it's why we rotate small local kegs instead of committing to 15.5-gallon monsters of fragile styles.

Your Virginia Beer Crawl, One Pint at a Time

Want to explore the state's scene without a road trip? Work your way through our list like this:

  1. Start with Port City's Optimal Wit — it's the gateway, approachable and quintessentially Alexandria.
  2. Move to a lager or pilsner from Hardywood or Virginia Beer Co. to calibrate your palate to clean, malt-forward brewing.
  3. Level up to the O'Connor Black IPA to see how far style boundaries stretch.
  4. Finish with Adroit Theory or Strangeways — the big, weird, barrel-aged stuff that shows Virginia can hang with anyone in the country.

Better yet, ask your bartender. The tap list changes, the season changes, and the best answer to "what's local tonight?" is always the keg we just tapped. Come thirsty — the Commonwealth's been busy.
